Welcome to the SPPHE Scholarship page. This scholarship was created in 2017 by George & Joaquin Herrera, Owners of the Queens Home Team, Inc and Goodfellas Fadeshop, Inc. George and Joaquin lost their younger sister (Anya Herrera) back in 2009 after she fell victim to Glioblastoma cancer. Anya was a strong woman who impacted the lives of everyone around her. She fought hard for her beliefs and was never afraid to voice her opinion. At the time of her passing, she was 27 years old, a high school english teacher, and single mother of three. She is survived by her three children who thankfully are all doing very well, both in school and in life.
The amazing thing about Anya’s life was the fact that she was able to accomplish so much, in so little time. She graduated college, had three children, spent time breakdancing, and helped hundreds of students as a High School teacher in her hometown League City, TX. At her funeral, there were over a thousand people in attendance, all of whom were impacted by her presence in some way, shape or form. One of her biggest accomplishments was graduating from the University of Houston. Not only because she was one of the first in her Family to graduate from a University, but also because she had all three of her children while she was still attending college, and she never took a semester off. So, in memory of all her accomplishments, and in honor of everything that she stood for, this scholarship fund was created. George, Joaquin, and the entire Herrera family hope to help another single parent out there who is pursuing a higher education regardless of personal circumstance. Where there’s a will there’s a way, and if she could do it, you can too!
Anya Herrera, 1983 – 2010
