ABOUT THE AREA
Situated in Central Queens is the suburban style neighborhood known as Utopia, Queens. Despite the high number of single-family homes, there are several apartments available in the area as well, mostly in attached rowhouses. This neighborhood maintains its residential feel with its front lawns, garages, and tree-lined streets.
Active residents of Utopia Queens never need to travel far to reach some of Queens’ most highly regarded parkland. Utopia lives up to its name for park-lovers, as it is within a short distance from four large greenspaces. To the east, beyond Kew Gardens Hills lies Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, which offers over 1,200 acres of open space, courts, sports fields, and a number of other recreational facilities.
But it doesn’t end there, as the Kissena Corridor Park extends off the northeastern side, providing almost 3 miles of uninterrupted parkspace. Following this path is the Queens Botanical Garden, with Kissena Park to its east, and Cunningham Park beyond that. The corridor provides miles upon miles of cycling and running paths for active people.
Most of Utopia’s local businesses can be found along Union Turnpike at the neighborhood’s southern end. An enormous variety of ethnic cuisine await food-lovers on this strip, which can be considered Utopia’s main thoroughfare. Also along the Union Turnpike is a Barnes & Noble Bookseller and a branch of the Queens Library, where you can grab a book to read in one of the area’s parks.
The suburban nature of Utopia, along with its selection of nearby parks, makes it a great place to raise a family. Situated just north of the Long Island Expressway is Francis Lewis Park, a thriving public high school with distinguished honors programs. Unless you drive a car to work, Utopia isn’t the most accessible neighborhood in Queens. But don’t get the idea that commuting is a pain, because five express buses service the area via the Union Turnpike and 188th Street. Three of these (the QM1, QM5, & QM6) take passengers into Midtown Manhattan in 45 minutes, while the other two (QM7 & QM8) end their trip in Lower Manhattan in about 40 minutes.
And for those who prefer to commute in the freedom and privacy of their car, Utopia’s location is prime. Just to the north lies the Long Island Expressway, and a few blocks to the south is Grand Central Parkway–two major metropolitan highways. If you’re looking for a suburban neighborhood with a reasonable commute, Utopia should definitely be considered.
- QM5 & QM6 express buses to Midtown 57th St via 6th Ave
