District 26 in northeast Queens has long been the city’s highest achieving district. Its cozy neighborhood schools have veteran teachers, plenty of books and supplies and parents who put a premium on good education. The schools are fairly traditional, reflecting in part the parents’ values.

Its communities range from solidly middle class to affluent and include Bayside, Oakland Gardens, Fresh Meadows, Douglaston, Little Neck, Glen Oaks, Floral Park, Bellerose, Jamaica Estates, Jamaica Hills, Hillcrest and parts of Hollis Hills and Holliswood.

Most parents are satisfied with their neighborhood elementary schools. However, parents may also consider the district’s gifted and talented programs at PS 115, PS 18, PS 188 and PS 203.

District 26 has highly regarded zoned middle schools as well as zoned high schools—a boon to families who want to avoid the city’s complex and time-consuming system of school choice. The Queens High School of Teaching, Liberal Arts and the Sciences is open to children citywide and does a particularly good job integrating special needs students in regular classes. On the same campus, PS/IS 266 is open to children across the district by lottery.

In recent years many immigrant families from South Korea, China, India and Japan have settled in District 26 because of its highly-regarded schools. Some District 26 parents send their children to afterschool and Saturday classes to boost their academic achievement.

Located on the border with Nassau County, District 26 is far from downtown Manhattan, which makes commuting a challenge. Many of its neighborhoods have a suburban feel, with single-families houses that lie beyond walking distance of the nearest subway line.
